The Government of India, on the 24th of April, postponed the 66th National Film Awards due to the enforcement of the Model Code of Conduct (MCC,) owing to the Lok Sabha elections.

Amit Khare, the Secretary of the Information and Broadcasting Ministry, took the decision of postponing the 66th National Film Awards. The decision was taken to ensure fair and smooth polling and restricting the misuse of media. This year, many faces belonging to the film industry are contesting the Lok Sabha elections.

The Ministry of Information and Broadcast released a statement stating, “Since the Model Code of Conduct (MCC) is in force, which facilitates level playing field to all political parties and the candidates and inter alia seeks to ensure that the power of media is not used in such a manner which affects the general conduct and level playing field during the election process, it has been decided to declare the awards after the election process is over and the MCC concludes.”

The National Film Awards is an annual ceremony organised to appreciate the best films of the Indian Cinema.

The winners of the National Film Awards were scheduled to be announced in the month of April, whereas the award ceremony was scheduled on the 3rd of May.

A panel of jury, consisting of famous filmmakers and film personalities, was constituted to decide the winners of the National Film Awards.

However, this year, the winners will be announced after the results of the Lok Sabha elections are declared.

The results of the Lok Sabha elections will be announced on the 23rd of May.
